September 12, 2008

Vancouver, BC – Ken Newbert, P.Eng., LEED® AP has assumed the role of Technical Director for Cobalt Engineering LLP. After 23 years as one of the founding Partners of the firm, Ken has passed his shares to the remaining management team to do what he loves most – mentor the staff.

“It has been a pleasure to be a Partner with Ken for the past 14 years. He is a true pioneer in environmental design. The Partners are pleased that Ken will still be here, contributing to the development of our next generation of sustainability-focused engineers. His knowledge, experience and passion are invaluable,” said Edward Smith, CEO for Cobalt.

Always passionate about the importance of life-long learning, Ken previously established and implemented Cobalt’s Mentoring and Leadership Program in 2003. “He’s in a position that suits him so perfectly. He’s methodical and detail-oriented and that’s the best part about working with him,” said Susan Hayes, EIT, LEED AP, Sustainable Designer.

“What makes him a great mentor is his passion for the business and to see people go beyond their boundaries. After I confer with him, I always feel comfortable knowing that I am presenting the most practical and economical solution,” added Gordon Ma, P.Eng., LEED AP Project Manager.

Ken Newbert is also the chairman of the Standing Committee on Energy Efficiency in Buildings, which is responsible for updating the 1997 Model National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings. He is also a member of the Standing Committee on Building and Plumbing Services, responsible for Part 6 of the National Building Code and the National Plumbing Code. He heads the Consulting Practice Committee for the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEGBC), and conducts practice technical reviews for the mechanical engineering members of APEGBC.

Prior to the establishment of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED) building program, Ken Newbert designed the first C2000 project in Western Canada. He was also involved in groundbreaking projects such as a 100% naturally ventilated office building in North Vancouver, BC. His more recent projects include the University of British Columbia’s Aquatic Ecosystems Research Laboratory (AERL), which is LEED Gold Certified and the award-winning NK’Mip Desert Cultural Centre in Osoyoos, BC.
